Looking at things I’m very happy that we as a species have come a long way, especially from our barbaric ways, we still have a long way to go. Although we still need to talk about the sins of the past, We as humans never believed that we were all equal for if we did we wouldn’t do some of the gruesome things we do to each other, both in the past and present. There are still wars going on in the world at all times. we as a human race tend to deny that sometimes these things are woven into the very fabric of our belief system, it is almost as if it is human nature. it is in everything we do, take religion, for example, everyone believes that their religion is a peaceful religion till the subject of killing comes up. Religion is a reflection of societies that we built, and things like slavery and killing are a part of it, take slavery, for example, most Christians never face the fact that slavery came from the very bible we call the good book. Let us take a look, shall we?
1 Peter 2:18
“Slaves, in reverent fear of God, submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate but also to those who are harsh”
1 Timothy 6:1
” ALL who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect. So that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered”
Colossians 3:22
Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.
Leviticus 25 44-46
“‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them, you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.
Luke 12 47-48
“The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked”
This came from the good book the one we call the bible, and in those days slavery was a normal thing, it even tells slaves to be good to their masters even the masters who were harsh to them, I understand pastors and heads of churches skipping over this, I think we should be able to have this conversation and understand that this has nothing to do with the good side of the religion, but we also have to understand that man created most of the systems we see on earth, and some of them are barbaric. we have to talk about these things it will help us heal.
