President Trump is known for signing executive orders, he is known for bypassing Congress and signing things into law. We know President Trump has signed a few executive orders, and for those who don’t know if a president doesn’t agree with a bill, or an act, etc, he can use his veto power. The president’s veto can be overridden by a two-thirds vote in the senate.
As we know in recent times president has signed some important executive orders, and these orders benefit the common man, as we are well aware congress doesn’t have the power to overturn an executive action, they can only pass a bill that blocks it, and when they do the president can also veto that bill. President Trump has taken executive action which directly or indirectly affects many black people. They may call him racist but this actually affects us, black people, in a positive way. As we are well aware, white America has more education in terms of university/college degrees as compared to their black counterparts. For a long time a University/college degree in basket weaving obtained by a white individual will attract the consideration of employers, as compared to a black individual with no degree at all, In fact, the black man with no degree may have useful skills that might benefit the employer, but if that same employer can’t see past the degree well, needless to say, we know who is getting the job.
I personally support this executive order for a few reasons, I think it will stop employers from overlooking valuable skills, especially from black people. I don’t know if the story of Vivien Theodore Thomas is common. He is the man who cured a disease called “blue baby syndrome” by employing complex surgical techniques. He someone who hasn’t been to college used his skills as a lab assistant to achieve something qualified surgeons haven’t been able to achieve. He was a lab assistant who ended training young surgeons, on his technique. He was given an honorary doctorate but it wasn’t in anything scientific or medical, it was Doctor of Laws.
Although this man did not have a degree, his skills took him places, he helped in the design of the automatic implantable defibrillator. The question in my mind was where were laws/policies like this when this man was alive, and I’m sure he would have obtained a grant to go to medical school if it was today.
AT the end of the day, another question is, how many people with his level of skill and talent, have been turned away from jobs because they didn’t have a degree. This law makes the provision to hire someone like that, as long as they bring some useful skill to the employer, the funny thing is that President Trump wasn’t the first one to think like this, change is inevitable, and it was coming anyway, it is just that people are stuck in their ways, so they would rather have someone with a degree, than someone without. Although this executive order specifically targets federal jobs, I think its a step in the right direction, for it, won’t be long before everyone follows, The private sector benefits from this, once upon a time a young boy by the name of Iddris Sandu created algorithms for Snapchat and Instagram even before he set foot in college, in fact, he has decided to skip college and work for big companies like Boeing. He is mostly self-taught and started at the tender age of 10, using public libraries. Just because of his skills, he has achieved more than a lot of people at the tender age of 21, for everyone who knows Nipsey Hussle, ( the rapper). Mr. Sandu was behind the creation of Hussle’s smart store, although almost never mentioned.
I urge everyone to read the story of Vivien T Thomas, it is a very interesting one!! also the story of Idris Sandu.
Black people should take advantage of this order, and acquire skills that will help us and benefit employers. After this pandemic is over, black people should take advantage of this order and apply for Federal jobs,
