Samuel L Jackson – Self Equanimity http://selfequanimity.com Current Affairs Tue, 29 Mar 2022 23:29:37 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.4 https://i0.wp.com/selfequanimity.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/SE-Copy.png?fit=32%2C32 Samuel L Jackson – Self Equanimity http://selfequanimity.com 32 32 176655959 Too Little , Too Late http://selfequanimity.com/too-little-too-late/ http://selfequanimity.com/too-little-too-late/#respond Tue, 29 Mar 2022 16:37:16 +0000 https://selfequanimity.com/?p=1734 I say this is too little too late,  He should have apologized when he gave his acceptance speech , but he didn’t , he apologized to everyone except Chris.  His statement is bogus. This is damage control at its best, a person like Will Smith shouldn’t  have done what he did , given that he had elements of this kind of violence in his history.  Hopefully everyone realizes the double talk in his apology, he couldn’t just say  I was out of line ,  he said, ” anyone can make jokes at his expense,  that is part of the job, but for Jada’s medical condition was too much to bear”, first question is what job is Jada in again ??  Oh yeah she is an actress just like Will, if she couldn’t take the heat, she should stay out of the kitchen. Again Michael Jackson had a known medical condition, anyone could have done research on Vitiligo, but the jokes kept coming, in fact when he revealed he had vitiligo, comedians doubled down on the jokes, even Michael Jackson in good faith thought some of the jokes were funny. Once you are in the entertainment business, this is part of the job, Will knew that, Jada knew it too. The truth of the matter is that , Will found a target he could pick on while impressing Jada at the same time.. and that was Chris Rock , surely he wouldn’t have done that to a few notable names like

  1. Mike Tyson(Former Heavyweight Champion)
  2. Michael Jai White(Actor, Martial Artist)
  3. Wesley Snipes(Actor, Martial Artist)
  4. Quinton Jackson (know for the A- Team movie)
  5. Evander Holyfield(Former Heavyweight Champion)

The fact that he thought he could walk up on stage and slap someone, because his wife was upset at a joke is quite interesting , this is where cancelled culture should strike but let us see if that happens. Never thought I see the day when Will Smith is a bully.

Again he wouldn’t have done it if he didn’t think he could get away with it while impressing his wife, at the same time….. too bad she doesn’t do the same for him!!!! This should be the final nail, does anyone remember what type of joke Will Smith made on the Arsenio Hall show in 1991? Yes that is right he made a bald joke to which some of the crowd got a little upset, he said “Oh these are jokes come on”

Just like Jada didn’t choose to be bald, this man didn’t choose to be bald either , but he laughed it off because he know Will was joking,  Wow the hypocrisy!!!!!

This event (the slap)  has overshadowed another black man winning an Oscar that night , Will Smith had to do something stupid, Samuel L Jackson is one of my favorite actors, he played a  character so well, I forgot that character was originally white (Nick Fury), that is not what he won for by the way,  he won his first Oscar that night ,Congratulations to him. His award was presented to him by Denzel Washington.

Will Smith should be ashamed of himself

Is it ok when you do it ??? http://selfequanimity.com/is-it-ok-when-i-do-it/ http://selfequanimity.com/is-it-ok-when-i-do-it/#respond Tue, 01 Mar 2022 23:23:22 +0000 https://selfequanimity.com/?p=1643 As usual, I ended up in an argument, ok I won’t call it an argument but a discussion. The discussion was about the movie Selma, the one about Martin Luther King, some found it disrespectful that a foreign black man played Martin Luther King, they felt the role should have gone to a “Native” Black man, of course, the Movie Harriet also came up. They felt the same way!!!.

Personally, I found no problem with it, I wasn’t bothered, either way, I was just looking for someone to tell a good story.  It is about bringing a particular character to life. A “boogie” man has been created, and all the blame goes to that boogie man. If we really believe certain stories should be for a particular demographic or a particular nationality (since we are all of the same race) of people then we should do that in every situation, we should be the first to criticize it if it were the other way round.

Nick Fury

Let us start with fiction, we all know the character Nick Fury, (in the marvel universe) well anyone who knows the comics knows that Nick Fury is a white man yet Samuel L Jackson played the character so well that, I cannot imagine anyone doing a better job.

Samuel L Jackson

Domino

Does anyone remember Deadpool 2,?  Domino is originally a white woman in the comics, Zazie Beetz did an amazing job, there were no complaints. For those who don’t know Zazie Beetz is a black Actress.

In the 1990’s Omar Epps, played the leading role in a movie called “Deadly Voyage”, it was about an African immigrant who witnessed several murders on a ship including. If it were the other way round I’m sure people will complain that the role should have gone to an African, since it was their story.

Omar Epps

Denzel Washington played a South African Lawyer named Steve Biko, the movie was called “Cry Freedom”. Again no one said that role should have gone to a South African.

Denzel Washington

Here is a list of Actors who have played Nelson Mandela

Danny Glover

Morgan Freeman

Terence Howard

Lawrence Fishburne

Sydney Poitier

Mandela was a South African, so to those people saying certain roles should be left for certain groups of people, Well that didn’t happen in this case

Will Smith Played a Nigerian Doctor, Dr. Bennett Omalu, I wonder why that role wasn’t left for  a Nigerian Actor

Don Cheadle played Paul Rusesabagina in Hotel Rwanda and Forest Whitaker played Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.

Forest Whitaker

I can see both sides of the argument,  a movie like Black Panther can’t be played by a white man, goes against the story itself,  even though we had 2 stories about fictional African countries played by “Native” black Americans, (Coming to America, Black Panther).

The truth of the matter is that people will complain about anything, at the end of the day, we just have to be fair … it’s not about marginalization, it’s about Acting, let us leave it at that… questioning someone’s identity is the very definition of discrimination.
